Microsoft welcomes in 2006 with a bang, nearly 3 years late.

Microsoft made a major announcement today - they will be offering “lightweight” versions of Office applications - Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote - through the browser. Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari will be supported. Users will be able to read and edit documents from the browser.

Looks like Microsoft awoke from a 3 year nap.  Maybe even longer.  Redmond has now decided (now being the key word) that it will make an online version of the Office applications available.  Hmm, now I’m no CEO, CTO, or high dollar Executive, but strategically, this should have been done years ago.  Like the day after Google launched an online word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation application.
